This wine is from one of Italy's oldest wineries. I think it actually dates back to the 1300's. From what I read, the family has included medieval knights, bankers, lawyers and patrons of the arts. Located in Tuscany, The Marchesi de' Frescobaldi is one of the biggest wine producers in Italy - over nine estates!
Frescobaldi has consistently recieved top ratings in Wine Spectator - with good reason!
Although I have not had the good fortune to drink any other wine from this producer, I can't say enough good things!
First of all, this wine is intense without being overpowering. It's pretty dry, which is what I prefer. However, it has very low tannins - which is kind of uncommon with a wine that has such a full body.
For those of you who don't know, tannins come from the grape skins and seeds which sort of infiltrate into the wine itself during the fermenting process. Too much of it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth and kind of causes what's known as the "pucker". Tannins can be good, though. They have been shown to help increase vascular health and reduce the peptide responsible for hardening the arteries.
Anyway, back to the review. The complexity of this wine is very direct without leaving any room for disappointment! Although I sometimes enjoy complex wines, the Remole Toscana is a pefect mix of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Going to a dinner party for the Holidays? Be sure to bring this gem along - everyone will love it and you'll be the star of the show!
